Darwin’s theory of evolution pertains to the adaptation of the species for survival. The process of adaptation imposes the formidable challenge of altering one's traits to harmonize with its surroundings. Perennial House, nestled in a tranquil residential neighbourhood of Amritsar, serves as an embodiment of this theory, gracefully adapting to its context.
This residence perpetuates the pious aura of the city with its exquisite minimalistic nature. An exposed brick façade flaunting a gentle curve overlooks the visitors, poised to engulf them within its warm embrace.
BRICK AND CURVES
A south-facing plot graciously accommodates this unmasked home, masterfully altering its layout to imbue it with a perennial essence. Surrounded by an urban jungle of concrete-laden structures, it becomes a revered landmark in the locality. The exposed brick abode exudes a warm aura that mirrors the personalities of its residents’. A gentle curve becomes the protagonist, with its introduction on the front façade itself. It encases a balcony weaving it into the narrative of the home. This elegantly curved facade pursues a deciduous tree; Termminalia, acting as its backdrop.
A mere three steps usher visitors in close proximity to the now convex curve, bringing them face-to-face with a rich, black-stained wooden door. As one's fingers brush against the rugged texture, they are guided into a minimalistic haven with natural light drenching the spaces, exuding an angelic ambiance.
This curve encases a living area on the south side, perpetuating the home’s intrinsic cordiality while keeping a vigilant eye on the dual entry through the glass façade. This space is the epitome of the home’s perennial nature, basking in indirect summer light that seeps through the gaps between the leaves of the deciduous tree. On the contrary, in winter this space is drenched in copious natural light. A visual connection is established with the rest of the home through the opening in the curved wall.
Adjoining the eccentric living area lies the dining area, where the residents spend their time bonding and engaging in conversations while the cooking is in process. Located in the west corner, a courtyard captures each room’s focus, serving as a sidekick to the residence. The dining area flaunts a bay window overlooking the courtyard beyond, which also doubles up as a lounging space. On the opposite end, a kitchen positioned in the east corner deviates from the warm palette, drawing attention to its cool contemporary tones.
Upon ascending a sleek staircase, one comes across the exclusive spaces for the family. A family lounge is perched on the top tier of the residence, acquiring exclusive access. This space is drenched in abundant natural light streaming in from the skylight above and the courtyard beyond. Adorning the southern façade, a slender slit, a result of the curved wall, permits a generous amount of light to infuse vitality into the entrance and the family lounge. This space is devoid of furniture except for a mat and a smattering of planters, so it could assume a versatile nature. A tantalizing glimpse of the balcony guarded by the curved wall that is the protagonist of the home, seamlessly connects the residents with their surroundings, forging an unbreakable connection.
This abode proudly sits, providing a stark juxtaposition to its immediate surroundings. Its eccentric elements subtly become a guiding beacon for the visitors. The choice of material used bestows a sense of a warm hug from the home.
The spatial orientation within the home, allows the residents to enjoy their precious family moments, all the while flaunting the famous Punjabi hospitality.
