About Project
Aurva Illam is a handcrafted earth home in Hyderabad that explores the quiet relationship between architecture, craft, and the land it stands on. Designed as a contemporary mud house, the residence embraces natural materials such as rammed earth, stone, terracotta, and oxide finishes to create a space that feels both rooted and timeless. Every wall, surface, and detail reflects the labor of artisans and masons who shaped the house by hand, giving the architecture a tactile warmth rarely found in modern homes. The design seeks to prove that earth architecture can exist comfortably within an urban context while remaining environmentally responsive and deeply connected to traditional building knowledge. At the heart of the home lies an open courtyard, or mandala, which anchors the spatial organization and allows light, air, and movement to flow naturally through the house. Vaulted terracotta roofs, shaded walls, and carefully positioned openings enable passive cooling through stack ventilation, maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures throughout the year. Sculptural stone elements, handcrafted pillars, and a floating stone staircase further highlight the collaboration between design and craft. More than a residence, Aurva Illam becomes a celebration of artisanship, where architecture grows slowly from the earth and carries the imprint of the hands that built it.
