About Project
Dharohar is a home shaped by memory, material and landscape, a return to roots for a couple who spent decades abroad before choosing to rebuild life in Himachal Pradesh. Set along a ridge in Palampur, the house draws the Dhauladhar range and surrounding forest into daily experience through carefully framed openings and warm, earthen interiors.
Built primarily with adobe, reclaimed slate, bamboo and eucalyptus, the residence embraces vernacular wisdom while adapting it for contemporary comfort and durability. A four-foot stone retaining wall anchors the structure, while skylights, terracotta jalis and crafted timber details bring lightness and texture to the spaces. Personal artefacts, ancestral pieces and restored elements like the family’s traditional palki weave an intimate narrative throughout the home. Dharohar stands as an example of circular, climate-responsive architecture that honours place, culture and the quiet beauty of handmade construction.
