About Project
This thoughtfully designed residence in Tiptur, Tumkur district, by A Threshold, stands as a modern interpretation of traditional South Indian living. Set on a 70’x40’ corner plot with little surrounding architectural context, the house embraces its location by rooting itself in local heritage and landscape. Inspired by the communal spirit of old Tiptur, the design aims to form a meaningful dialogue between people, nature, and built space. A striking black granite rubble wall sourced from a local quarry encloses the house like a protective shell, creating a clear boundary while preserving openness within. The design reimagines the “katte” as multi-level, semi-public gathering spaces, layered between courtyards and verandahs. These overlapping volumes blend privacy with connectivity, offering rich spatial experiences and cross-views throughout the house. Internally, the house flows across varied levels, interspersed with staggered courtyards that soften the structure and invite natural light. The fusion of materiality and spatial rhythm not only respects regional identity but also transforms the home into a living, breathing extension of its place both rooted and refreshingly contemporary.
