About Project
Mallige, a 2200-sq-ft home in the coastal village of Yermal, draws its soul from an early childhood memory of walking through an old Mangalore tile factory. The house echoes that sense of vastness and warmth through its high sloping roof, exposed trusses, and soft, filtered light. Designed by The Black Sheep Farm, it embraces the charm of traditional coastal homes while reinterpreting them for a denser, noisier present. Introverted by intent, Mallige turns away from neighbouring structures and shapes its own world through courtyards, skylit volumes, and carefully framed views. At its heart is an open dining courtyard anchored by a custom yellow cement monolith table, lily pond, and champa tree, with bamboo pendant lights hovering above like floating lily pads. This central space acts as both threshold and gathering hub, guiding movement toward living areas and the two bedrooms. Crafted with lime plaster, terrazzo, reclaimed wood, terracotta, and bamboo, the home celebrates texture, imperfection, and coastal light. Built-in seating, shaded verandas, and cross-ventilated spaces create a relaxed rhythm, making Mallige a warm retreat that balances memory, climate, and craft with quiet confidence.
