About Project
Originally intended as a tribute to Padmaramji Kularia, the Nokha Village Community Center in Rajasthan has evolved into a lively educational and social hub serving 144 nearby villages. The 9,000 sq. ft. structure features a sweeping, spiral design that wraps around the site, forming a shaded courtyard and amphitheater perfect for performances, festivals, and daily gatherings. The building's gently sloping roof doubles as an accessible, landscaped garden where visitors can relax and take in expansive views of the desert. Inside, a museum is designed to tell the story of Padmaramji Kularia. A children’s library occupies the rest of the indoor footprint. To combat the extreme desert heat, the library is enclosed by traditional Jaalis made of local sandstone, which naturally cool the interior while casting beautiful, shifting shadows. A grass-covered earth berm on the southern side provides further natural insulation. By combining these architectural techniques with eco-friendly practices like rainwater harvesting, water recycling, and passive cooling, the project keeps its environmental footprint small.
