The Driftwood

The Driftwood is a tropical brutalist home shaped by memory, movement, and a life well travelled. Designed for an architect, the house brings together influences gathered from childhood in nature and village life, architectural education, and years spent across villages, towns, and cities. Set within a dense residential neighbourhood in Kerala, the home turns inward, using a courtyard to bring daylight, ventilation, landscape, and everyday life into its interiors. Raw concrete, natural timber, cement flooring, oxide finishes, and rubble masonry express a commitment to material honesty and craftsmanship. Rooted in the spatial wisdom of Kerala’s vernacular architecture, The Driftwood reinterprets courtyards, shaded transitions, and deep overhangs through a contemporary tropical brutalist vocabulary.
